Don, I haven't had a 216 since around 1976 and can't recall how it went on, but on the 235s I've learned the side cover can leak right at the back lower corner. This leak isn't good at all because it runs down the side of the block and mimics a rear seal leak. If you're trying to keep everything 100% original, then this won't be of interest, but I can promise it will help things if functionality is your goal: attach the gasket to the cover using a sealer that won't leak no matter what. I like the black silicone extreme stuff. I think if Noah had that, he could still be floating around somewhere. Then using a piece of aluminum 3/4" wide and at least 1/16" thick cut to length and round the corners, mark and drill holes to match the lower holes on the cover and use this piece to keep your cover nice and flat with pressure spread evenly. You may need 1/4 longer bolts or you may not. I do pretty much the same thing on the valve cover and it stops leaks there. On the valve cover, I use thicker aluminum, arch the pieces at the bolt hole and use longer bolts. The way these engines sit (at such an exaggerated angle) oil runs right down to the corner of that side plate and just sits there with no place to go. I have thought about drilling a drain hole, but I have hydraulic lifters and fear I'd hit the oil galley. Good luck.
