I am reminded that a large group of men (former boys), rusty metal, fire, moving vehicles and an assortment of other odds and ends provides a better-than-average opportunity for unintended outcomes (the new pleasant phrase that replaces blood and guts). With that in mind, rest assured, while we do the things we do we will do them smartly and in full support of appropriate risk managed decision making. I do not make this up - It has been directed and I am the professional, fully trained and credentialed, Homecoming Director of Risk Management.
We will be supportive of each others projects and work space. If you need room to work, make it known. Your second hand noise is bad for my ears.
We will keep the shops clear and somewhat clean as we go. Cords tidy and off the floor to the extent possible.
We will keep the air hose stowed to the extent possible.
We will find and use the lighting. There are options this year.
We will be smart with power tools. If you need guidance, direction or an extra hand ask for help. Clear your workspace, Use your PPE (there is much of that in the shop). See pledge above about your 2nd hand noise, dust and sharp metal edges.
We will only use the cutting torch outside, clear of most of the otherstuff we will be playing with. Fire extinguisher at the ready (it is in the shop) with a spotter. And only with clearance from the Farm owner who either has or has not paid the insurance.
We will use jack stands carefully positioned.
We will use the grinder with care. Grigg and Don might help to recondition the wheel and conduct an operational check (on Friday 1st thing).
John mentioned the off limits (farm chemical related) areas. Those no kidding are scary places not to be trifled with.
We might tend a small pit fire if the weather is consistent with the last 10 previous years. Keep the fire in the pit and keep the mechanic activity and tools away from the fire pit. Wood provided.
We will engage if we see an activity that needs a smarter mind or if the activity needs extra help to ensure a better outcome.
We should not have to work alone (might I dare - We wont work alone). 2 working together will make better risk decisions. And it is the theme for the weekend.
Friends getting together to share a common interest.
We will respect the privacy and property of the neighbors in all directions of the farm.
I am sure there is more, but you get the general areas of due regard. We have been a very good, self-correcting group in the past. There is no reason that I know of to be more concerned this year. I will let you know as we go through the weekend.
While best intentioned, if we do have something that needs first aid the Homecomings EMT will be on station and able to assist. He will be wearing the special hat. He will introduce himself as such.
