If you are worried about static on the plastic, then buy the paper coated plastic drop cloths from the hardware store and use those. They absorb the overspray a bit and the paint doesn't flake off when you bump them. Put one on the floor, too.
You could use the metal frame of one of those portable gazebos instead of plastic pipe. I have a 10x10 folding one that has a metal frame, I got it for $100 and it even has a handy carrying case with wheels.
