My system sure worked better when I ran a dedicated ground wire, 8 gage, from the back of the alternator ground lug to the battery negative terminal. If your brackets or alternator are painted you might not be getting consistent ground to the alternator. That was my situation. It worked without the ground wire for a while but after a time it did not charge properly. Ground wire fixed it.
