I have also done break in runs with a garden hose connected to the water pump inlet, the fan belt off, and the upper radiator hose disconnected from the radiator and pointed toward the ground. Run enough volume of cold water through the engine to prevent overheating while breaking in the cam and lifters. It's messy, but it keeps the engine cool.
