Originally, they were bolts on Chevrolet stovebolt engines (sorry, I do not know the lengths).

Studs and bolts could be used.
An unthreaded "pin/stud" was at each end of the head on Chevrolet sixes.
Contemporary GMCs used threaded bolts at the ends.
