I see you are using a generic wiring kit. KwikWire posted the instructions online, so I had a look. At the bottom of page 12, there is a note about how to connect an ammeter:

However, it won't work if you follow their instructions! The alternator has to connect to the ammeter. See this 11 year old thread:
