It's a bypass type housing. There is an outlet in both the top and bottom castings. i am just trying to make sure I get water through the head until the thermostat opens. I hear they can crack without it. I also hear it's witchcraft and you would do just fine without the bypass. I figure I got ti - I'll use it. Just want to use it right.
