In my past life as manager of a automotive service department for a national retail chain, it was common practice for the mechanics to use the air gun to blow the dust off brake drums and backing plates. The entire shop (6 bays) would be filled with asbestos dust for several minutes before settling on every surface in the shop. We also had the grinding machine to arc shoes for a proper fit. How we all survived is a mystery. Several of my former mechanics have passed on but none to my knowledge from lung cancer. Its nothing to turn a blind eye to. If I were going to do it today, knowing what I know, I would use a dust mask at the very least.
