Yes, it can make the steering act funny. You will have to overcome the spring pressure on the balls every time you turn. With a round ball, the spring pressure will be constant. If you do replace the ball and sockets, chuck the ball end in a drill, while spinning in the drill, apply lapping compound to the cups and lap them to the ball. It really helped mine.
