If you are talking about separating the actual brass segmented ring from the hub, it is normally not removable. If you have bought new brass rings then I guess you will want to remove it. They are attached with what looks like tiny dowels. I don't know how a new one would be secured. I am going by what I have seen on the 38 synchros.
