It has been a while since your observation & remedy has been posted. I like your soaking the tube in degreaser option to the good-old-boys option (that usually works without ruining the tube) of filling/soaking the tube in kerosene and then "burning out" the tube.
The road draft tube works quite well, except in low-speed stop-and-go city driving.
