The neighbor had this disc laying buried in the mud in the field out behind his house
for a few years. Under the mud, It was covered with concrete. To him it was just a
piece of scrap he'd picked up on a job somewhere, to me.....a sow's ear to be
turned into a silk purse.
After chipping the concrete off I found a 2" thick by 24" disc that appears to
be a steel casting. It rings like steel, doesn't have that familiar thud that
cast iron typically has. when hit with a hammer. The dang thing weighs
260# and I've been trying to think of some use for it.
Well...I'm modifying and motorizing a 1/2" plate bead rollers that I made
way back when I built my Pitts special biplane. So.....I think I'll use it for
a base for the roller and I've had a chunk of 8" main line for natural gas
standing in the corner for a couple of years that I guess I'll use for the
column. Over Kill??? By a bunch for sure, but I might as well put these
old scrap pieces to good use. That'll be one ell of a solid stand for
that bead roller.
