Wrenchbender - I used to go to the store with my Mother, and I got to pick out the cereal. Mostly, the cereal with the best premiums was the best cereal (health-wise) and the worst-tasting (wonder why the good premiums

), so Mother was not concerned with my choices.
In 1953, when Wheaties came out with the metal car emblem premiums, and in 1954 and 1955 with the metal license plates (bicycle size); we started buying Wheaties. The taste was kind of like the cereal my doctor recommends today; you go to the store, read the labels, pick out the healthiest cereal by label, take it home, give the cereal to the birds, and EAT THE BOX! Interestingly, the birds won't touch the cereal either.

But back to 1953. Fish (that we caught) was a staple in our diet. Wheaties, if mixed with a raw egg, and some chicken blood (grew up on a farm); made a wonderful doughbait for catfish.
You have to improvise!
Oh, and those wooden airplanes: I learned NOT to glue them together! When they crashed, the individual pieces would move, but not break; and the plane could be reused.
