Having used lots of basically stock HEI's on "Claimer Class" round track engines where we were required to run "stock-appearing" parts, I learned quite a few sneaky tricks about GM HEI distributors. Fact #1- - - - -a totally stock HEI is good to around 5500 RPM before it begins to spark-scatter and make an engine miss. That's WAY above the speed any sane stovebolter expects his glorified tractor engine to run. Fact #2- - - - -with some VERY inexpensive tinkering I can make that same distributor go to 7K+ RPM with complete reliability- - - - -no horrendously expensive parts required.
