As Rick stated, 1955 was the ONLY year SBC to NOT have an oil filter set-up cast to the drivers side bottom of the block, it was remote. So, that's a real easy one to ID.
The serial number will be stamped on the "number pad" in front of the passenger side head.
The casting numbers are hard to see as they are behind the heads on top of the block at the firewall.
