Is a T5 transmission a viable alternative behind a 283 in a 1956 3100 SWB truck. If so what is involved and what parts are needed etc. . Looks like some have done this, but don't find a how to write up for it. I live in the sticks, so needs to be as simple as possible as nowhere close for any major fabrication

It is totally doable. Not difficult.
Finding the right T5 may be the biggest challenge. If you can live without a cable driven speedometer then the solution is much easier.
Match the overdrive gear to your rear diff gear. Very important if you want a good result.
Get an S10 T5 from 1993 or earlier because you want the Muncie bolt pattern case. It will bolt right to your 283 bell. Swap out the original 14 spline input shaft for a 10 spline input shaft. That way it will bolt right up and you can use the factory clutch package you already have in the truck. It also eliminates the need for that expensive adapter plate.
