First off, if you are a total novice, buy Tom Brownell's book called How to Restore your Chevrolet Truck. It may not have everything you need for your fire truck, but it will help you develop a plan.
Evaluate what you have...does it run? What kind of shape is it in?
Do you want it to pump water?
Most important...how much do you want to spend?
I would try not to give in to the temptation to take it all a part. If I had to do mine again, I would work on items with them still on the truck. Having that huge pile of truck all on shelves and in boxes can make the project seem never ending...
Ask lots of questions...none are stupid. Use the search function..
