I kinda did what you are pondering ...
My '54 3104 had a metal body fuel pump when I bought the truck. I bought a reproduction glass bowl pump, but the arm didn't work. So I mated the top half of the reproduction glass bowl pump with the bottom half of the all metal fuel pump back in 2011. It worked fine and still does.
Don't know if you could pull the diaphram and valves out a metal pump and put into the glass pump. Replace the cork gasket for the glass bowl. It will shrivel like a cornflake if allowed to dry out while the pump is apart. Chevs of the 40's may have them.
Maybe the 6-cyl pump part number in the
1958 Parts Catalog will help you find a donor metal body fuel pump.

this video:The 1954 (55-1st) fuel pump is slightly different from previoius models. The inlet and outlets were at a 20-deg angle to the block instead of being parallel as in earlier models. The pump in your photo has the correct angled fuel lines for 1954-1955(1st). I believe that the pumps were all metal for 1955(2nd) and beyond.
