I used foam for the seat in my 58 2-ton with no issues (stock suspension). I also used foam in my 59 Suburban but, I had different suspension on it and we are talking 1/2 ton which would be a softer ride anyway. 4" of firm foam and then 1" soft and 1/2" sewn to the back of the upholstery to make the ribs.
