I forgot to add the reason why I got carried away with the end grinder with a cut off wheel.
I discovered, after drilling out the rivets, that the clips are also welded. Makes sense. Having the clips on the back makes it hard to trace the corners on the plywood.
Choice was cut the clips off and use the peices to trace the corners
OR
Trace the corners with the clips on with the spring frame not sitting flat ... this would be a bit less precise.
Since I was going to cut them off anyways, I went to town and hoped for the best; it worked fine.
