A little grease or oil on the back of the taper and on the threads doesn't hurt, it will let the fitting tighten up without locking the metals together.
Galled threads is usually only an issue with stainless steel fasteners. Plain 'ol steel is usually OK dry, but a little lube won't hurt and like HRL said, brass doesn't need anything.
