Never seen a factory or manufacturer's recco to back off anything.
Right. The only time I've seen that is for wheel bearings. Torque down to seat while rotating, back off and torque again, then back off 1/x turns.
That's better than the "Torque 'em down till the break and back off a 1/2 turn" method.
