As a non-mechanic who has done this very thing (and is about to do it again, thanks to Hotrod Lincoln deadlining my engine ... frown ), I can vouch for the fact that it isn't a huge project to yank an engine, clean it (and the engine bay) and put it back in. You could probably do it over the course of two weekends with the week in between.

Lots of other easy things you could do while you have it out, too.
