Look at the side cover of the transmission where the shifter bellcranks are. If it's got 4 bolts holding it on, it's got the non-synchronized 1st. gear. If there are 7 bolts, it's a Saginasw transmission, and 1st. is synchronized. A Saginaw that grinds going into 1st. below about 15 MPH needs a new 1st. gear synchronizer.
