I dealt with this recently too. Bring the engine to the timing ball and pointer alignment for number 1 cylinder. Loosen the bracket holding the distributor in place and carefully pull it up until the gears disengage. turn the distributor clockwise until you can re engage the distributor drive gear. Slide it back in and bump the engine with the starter until the distributor seats in the oil pump. Then re time the engine.
