Unless there's a lot of abrasive dust involved (gravel road travel frequently, etc.) most seals fail because the bushing or bearing BEHIND the seal wears and lets the shaft it's sealing bounce around. No lip seal is going to be able to keep a tight contact with a moving target. That's why I would never attempt to install a pump seal on an automatic transmission unless the customer also agreed to replace the converter support bushing.
