Amtrak Joe and I did the round trip (approx 1,500 miles) from Washington DC greater metro area to Kansas City a few years ago (didn't get the long distance award, though ...) with an unrebuilt bone stock straight six and 6.40/8.72:1 rear axle. Got between 8 and 9 MPG and cruised 62 governed MPH smile.
