You're right 3B, the "N" sufix would indicate the standard 283 V8 was fitted into a 5000 Series truck. In 1957 the 283 was the big motor for the year and wasn't advertised as being available in the 3100 series trucks, they would have gotten the 265 V8. If Chevrolet did majically put a 283 in a 3100, they didn't publish what sufix code they used. The 283 was available in the 1958 3000 series trucks as the new 348 was now the new big motor.
