What you're seeing is called an Electrolock. It was intended to prevent hotwiring. It requires a special coil. I've never seen a 12v coil made to work with an Electrolock. IMHO it's a piece of history and shouldn't be cut up although many do that. If you're a good enough fabricator you can rig it up to work with a modern coil where a casual look by someone who doesn't know about how it's supposed to work would never suspect it's not stock. Is the Electrolock still connected to the original coil? If it is, someone more familiar with the '46 will have to help you with removing it. I can help with the 37-39.
