I haven't used the appliance paint but have done a couple of fridges in a fire truck theme using PPG automotive paint straight over the preped existing finish.
I first disassembled the fridge by removing the doors and seals. This ensured I had paint in all areas. Looks tacky to have the seal move and reveil the old color. Then I degreased it using Pre-Kleano and scuffed the entire fridge using a 3m scuff pad, blow it off degrease again and then tack it off. The fridges I have done were raffled off at firefighter charity functions, they turned out great
