So reading through all the previous posts, it seems that everyone would prefer to have the floor mat sit nice and neat, tucked under the door windlace retainers. The argument is that accessing the battery compartment or brake master cylinder would be a real pain. A legitimate issue.

Since I'm currently at this same cross-road and before I make any cuts, I was wondering what everyone though about just cutting access 'flaps' in the mat, so that it could fold open and then lay flat again in it's original position? For example, if the battery cover had a 'U' shaped cut that was on the side away from the passenger door. A little velcro or something could help if it started to warp and not lay so flat.

Is this something that anyone has tried before?

Thanks!
