The u-joint cover housing/tube slides back and forth on the outside of the drive-shaft torque-tube (the cork/rubber ring/seal inside the metal rings, inside the rear of the u-joint housing/cover/ball/bell provides the oil seal), when the drive shaft moves in/out of the u-joint yoke.
You seem to have that figured-out right.
