red oxide is basicly an enamel, and while it's a coating that can take some abuse, it won't stand up well for long - epoxy is .... epoxy - fairly bullet proof, comes kinda gray or tan, can be tinted any color - if it's gonna be yer 'topcoat', epoxy primer is what you want
