Did you happen to adjust the distributor while troubleshooting?
Advancing the timing too much will cause knocking.
re. starting fluid. Bad stuff. Many folks laugh but once you start using it on an engine it becomes addicted to it. It gets the engine started but makes the existing problem worse.....
