I have a 54 3100 with the original 235. I don't think it has ever been rebuilt. I have ticking under multiple different conditions. My question. Does the 54 235 have hydraulic lifters? If so, I will try some of the procedures outlined in this post. I do seem to have lower occurrences of ticking when I add a lead substitute to the gas tank.
