Matching the rear axle gear to your OD gear is very important if you want it to perform properly.
I think the T5 from an S10 truck with a V6 works best for most. Those usually have a 0.72 OD gear. Here is a few general rules.
1993 and earlier S10 T5s have a Chevy bolt pattern where they bolt to the bell. Don't forget to look at 1993 and earlier GMC Sonoma and S15 trucks too.
A 4 cylinder truck usually has a 0.86 OD gear.
If you have a 3.73 or lower rear axle then you want the 0.72 OD gear.
If you have a 3.08 rear axle then you want the 0.86 OD gear.
If you have a 3.42 rear axle then a 0.86 OD gear works best if you don't have much HP. If you have a V8 engine then you could run a 3.42 rear with the 0.72 OD without any problems.
If you want your factory cable speedometer to work AND keep your bench seat, then you need a 1988 or earlier T5. All the 1992 and earlier Camaro and Firebird T5s have a cable speedo but the shifter location doesn't work with a bench seat.
I have a really nice T5 for sale. See LINK for 8/13/16 | | |
