as Jerry said sometimes the flange on the carrier is in a different place to accomodate the different thickness of ring gear. Dana 44's the split was at 3.73 I think, 4.10 was a different carrier. At any rate, if the adjustment shims are behind the carrier bearings like on a Dana 44, you would have to remove the bearings to adjust the way the gears mesh anyway, even if the carrier is the same and the ring will bolt to it. It is not just a matter of swapping the parts out.

If the adjustments are made on the carrier end caps (like Ford 9" or Mopar 8 3/4), you don't have to remove the carrier bearings and may be able to swap the ring from one carrier to the other.
