Good idea to check the compression. I haven't looked at that lately. I adjusted my valves just last week and it is quite possible I have a tight clearance or two. thanks for the tip.
to follow up on jfnar's post - the engine idles very smooth - I can get the idle into the low 300 rpms if it want. The roughness comes with revs, it feels like a slight imbalance problem actually.
