I put a '55 passenger car w/overdrive in my '49 1/2 ton many years ago and as I recall I just took the arms off the '49 transmission and used them on the '55 side cover. I did have to file a new groove in at least one of the shafts in order to bolt the arm in the correct position. The shafts are pretty soft and it only takes a few minutes with a round file to make the new groove.

If you go with a passenger car as opposed to a later truck 3-speed, you'll need to use a pair of bolts w/nuts and lock washers on the bottom pair of holes into the bellhousing.
