Good point, Joe- - - -we used to advance the cam 3-4 degrees for better torque off the turns, or retard it for better horsepower at the end of the straightaway. In the late 1970's I installed a "Vara-Cam" timing gear on the race engine with centrifugal weights built in that retarded the cam at high RPM so a gain could be achieved at both ends of the power band. Now variable-advance cam sprockets on dual overhead cam engines are computer controlled.
