One leg of a small cotter pin is ideal for releasing those lock tabs on a connector block. I use a pair of needle nose pliers to grip the cotter pin piece and push it into the slot beside the female connector. This depresses the lock tab and allows it to be withdrawn from the insulator block. Do the splice, insulate the connection, raise the tab back to its original shape, and re-insert the connector into the insulator block.
