The simplest way is to use a pry bar or a big screwdriver between the flywheel teeth and the edge of the bell housing. You can roll it over one tooth at a time that way as you watch for the timing marks to appear in the hole above the starter. Be sure you're turning the crankshaft clockwise as you watch the harmonic balancer. Be aware that the pointer and the BB in the flywheel align twice- - -once when the #1 cylinder is on the compression stroke, and again when the #6 is at TDC on the compression stroke, one turn of the crankshaft later. If you haven't disturbed the position of the distributor, make sure the rotor is pointing toward the #1 plug wire when the BB aligns with the pointer.
