To turn by hand I grab fan blade with one and by pushing on the belt about mid span add sufficient tension with the other.

To crank over well enough to start you need good clean battery cable connections and healthy size cables, I like 2/0 for 12V and would still be plenty for 6V. Don't overlook the ground cable either. If not concerned with originally the best location for ground cable is a starter mounting bolt.
