I can tell you firsthand that the step down charger works fantastic! My elliptical machine required 4 Size D batteries. I used an old charger from one of the kid's video games with 9V DC output. The battery terminals have been connected with the step down charger which has been set at 6.2V DC.

No more batteries.......
