Removing a battery cable to check a charging system is almost guaranteed to create problems, even if they didn't exist beforehand. I've seen voltage spikes of well over 100 VDC on an oscilloscope when a cable is disconnected with the engine running. There are much better ways to check for proper charging system operation.
