If the by-pass canister oil filter was really needed, wouldn't you think that GM would have installed it on the assembly line?
Was its development anything more than a cash cow for the car dealerships?
As long as the rubber lines don't fail (and many did, BTW), its design did not adversely affect the operation of the engine, since it was not operational most of the time (as stated by Dave, above).
