Even if it didn't come from the factory with any type of gasket, metal on metal is never a good idea. In this case paint on paint for awhile. I would at least do what Tim does with the roofing felt. Roofing Felt comes in handy in making gaskets for various other parts of the truck. It should be put on the honorary Mainstay list somewhere.
