Beware true amateur advice! However, Warren is probably correct re lash. Measure how much one ring tooth moves with the pinion still. The leg of the indicator should be tangential to the outside section of a tooth (ie perpendicular to a line drawn from the center of the ring gear to the perimeter, and parallel to the plane of the gear).

For runout, my shop manual says the bearings should be pre-loaded, so I don't believe there should be any run-out. This comes from a 1954 shop manual. I'll try to scan the images and send them along.
