I opted to go the paint route until such time that I can afford to rechrome or replace. I sanded down the rust and bubbled chrome, then used a rattle can primer. I used Rustoleum primer for heavily rusted metal. I have had good luck with it. It seals nicely and takes rattle can enamel very well. That was 4 years ago and it stil looks great.
